Downtown Houston Hotels Plan Updates

By M+E Staff

Located in the heart of Uptown Houston, the Royal Sonesta Hotel Houston is just a few blocks from The Galleria’s many options for shopping, dining and entertainment. This sounds pretty good, right? Well, thanks to a $25 million renovation, things are getting better.

The Royal Sonesta Houston, which makes its big reveal Nov. 20, features upgrades to its lobby, interior spaces, and food and beverage outlets. It was last renovated in 2001 during its days as a Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Hotel. In 2012, it was purchased by Hospitality Properties Trust, which remains the current owner of the 23-story hotel.

With 485 guest rooms, and 50,000 square feet of event space including 23 breakout rooms, the Royal Sonesta Houston is a nice spot for a meeting. It’s within walking distance of Houston’s museum and theater districts, and just minutes from downtown.

The Royal Sonesta isn’t alone in its improvements, though.
Throughout Houston — particularly near downtown — there have been a number of hotel renovations. The Savoy Hotel will be redeveloped as a Holiday Inn. The Greenway DoubleTree by Hilton is undergoing a $15 million redo as it makes a departure from the Renaissance brand. The historic Lancaster is planning a $10 million facelift and the JW Marriott is well into an $80.8 million renovation. Maybe it’s time to meet in Houston.
