Time and again, Mexico will surprise you—in the best possible ways. Cancun, a 40-year-old city on the Yucatán Peninsula, is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and known for its world-class resorts, white sand beaches and turquoise water stretching to the horizon. It’s also becoming one of the Caribbean’s most sought-after sites for meetings and events.

The Cancun International Convention Center offers more than 150,000 square feet of exhibit and meeting space that can accommodate thousands of people, according to the Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau. Nearby, more than 32,000 hotel rooms are prepared to host meeting and convention groups, whether it’s a small incentive trip or a large-scale conference.

The Marriott Cancun Collection, which is just 11 miles from the airport, includes two luxury resorts—the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa and CasaMagna Marriott Cancun Resort—totaling 898 rooms. These properties also offer a large, full-service onsite convention center. The connected resorts, each with different price points and amenities, work seamlessly to provide planners with dual access to meeting spaces and a variety of guest room options. Planners can take advantage of a centrally located private group check-in/ out area, cross-trained event staff across both resorts, a single reservations and billing team, and a shared planning team.

Together, the resorts offer more than 88,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event space. At the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, there are eight indoor event rooms and 18 breakout rooms for a total of 20,235 square feet of event space, all of which are equipped with the latest audiovisual technology and high-speed Wi-Fi. The Tulum Ballroom, one of the largest in Cancun, comfortably accommodates up to 1,400 attendees and guests can take full advantage of the eight restaurants and bars shared between both resorts. Both properties are part of the Marriott Convention and Resort Network (CRN), an international collection of 100-plus convention and resort hotels that have united to deliver the highest level of service consistently, year after year.

The JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa can expertly tailor events, including personalized, chef-led tours of an on-site garden to reveal how fresh herbs are used in local dishes. For small groups, attendees can pick their own herbs and have them immediately incorporated into custom cocktails by mixologists for a tasty experience, according to Director of Sales and Marketing Rocio Juarez. Or, guests can enter a guacamole-mixing contest on the lawn, complete with individual tables containing all the ingredients—even roasted grasshoppers!—that guests might want to use. Chefs hats and aprons make the event complete as judges taste test the recipes to declare a winner.

When meeting at the Marriott Cancun Collection, it only makes sense to “wow” guests with a beach event. Count on Marriott’s experts to create everything from themed cocktail events to culinary stations featuring gourmet and local dishes. Local Mayan performers are available to re-enact historical dances; it’s unforgettable entertainment that offers a glimpse of local culture.

Of course, a group visit to Cancun would be remiss without some built-in leisure time. Guests are welcome to try yoga on the beach, stroll alongside the sea, de-stress in an oceanview cabana or cool off in one of the resorts’ many swimming pools. For a real treat, the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa offers Mayan-inspired treatments in its spa, which includes tennis courts, a steam room and an Olympic-style pool. Overall, the Marriott Cancun Collection is a winning combination of luxurious amenities and convenient services, all located in some of the world’s most sought-after scenery.

Cultural roots run deep in South Texas, providing a dynamic backdrop for your destination meeting, event or retreat. Texas Meetings + Events took a little road trip to check out three of those vibrant communities along the border and Gulf of Mexico.

Because Texas shares a border with Mexico, there are lots of reasons to visit the state aside from its amazing Tex-Mex cuisine. It’s the second biggest state in the USA, both by area and population, and if you want to get off the beaten path, you’ll find some really cool things to do that will make unforgettable memories of your holiday in the Lone Star State.
