Austin is not only keeping it weird, it’s keeping it moving.

Registration is now open for the 23rd annual ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot, Austin’s Thanksgiving Day tradition benefiting Caritas of Austin. The event includes a five-mile run, one-mile walk, and a Kids’ K -- all taking place outside the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 2013.

I’ve recently started entering 5k races at the encouragement (read: merciless teasing) of my very-much-in-shape nieces and nephews. It’s been fun to make it a family affair, comparing notes about times and distances, upcoming races and sharing in some friendly competition.

Most of the races I’ve entered have been relatively small in comparison to the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot, which is the largest five-mile run in Texas. More than 23,000 participants are expected for this year’s event. Last year, the Trot raised more than $325,000 for Caritas of Austin, a nonprofit that serves the impoverished and homeless.

Early online registration for the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot is $20 for the untimed five-mile, $25 for the timed five-mile, $18 for the one-mile walk and $8 for the Stepping Stone School Kids’ K. All registrations include a T-shirt and runner guide. Registration prices will increase starting Nov. 1.

Awards will be given to the overall first-place, second-place, and third-place male and female runners, as well as the top three men and women in each age group. Awards will also be given to the best costumes, first place team, and the top three finishers in the following categories: Maternity, Baby Jogger, Wheelchair, Longhorn and Red Raider.

Stay in the know, and drop me a line if you plan to be there, too!

Paws for a Break

MPI is teaming up with Love Dog Adventures—a Las Vegas animal-assisted therapy program. Designed as a stress-reducing activity, several dogs will be present during Smart Monday for attendees to cuddle with. These puppy sessions are quickly becoming a hot new trend and have been featured in a number of World Education Congresses. Puppy Cuddling is sponsored by Visit Norfolk.
