Recently, I spent 48 hours hiking through backcountry with nothing but a 28-pound pack and the company of five other hikers - only one of whom I’d ever met before. Let me tell you, there is nothing like pushing through exhaustion to build a sense of camaraderie. I made friends in the small victories: reaching the top of a bluff, scaling down a boulder, building a fire.

By the time we reached the end of the trail, I knew these were people I could count on. And I knew something else, too. There is something incredibly powerful about outdoor teambuilding.

So when I learned about a new, on-property teambuilding activity at La Toretta Lake Resort and Spa, I knew I needed to share the news. The resort, situated on Lake Conroe just northwest of Houston, recently added year-round kayaking to its collection of teambuilding activities.

The resort’s kayak launch is located on the property near the conference center, so there’s no need to build travel time or transportation into the itinerary. At the dock, tandem kayaks and life vests await. They’re perfect for competitions like buoy races or relay races. For a different twist, try kayak soccer using floating goals, or make the kayaks part of a scavenger hunt.

La Torretta has other teambuilding activities, too, like chili or barbecue sauce cook-offs, a 20-minute salsa challenge, a cake decorating challenge and a tasty competition called "Dessert Wars." Previous groups have built camaraderie through beach Olympics and glow-in-the-dark golf on the property’s 18-hole miniature golf course. Speaking of golf, the resort has 18-hole golf teambuilding options on its championship course.

La Torretta Lake Resort and Spa’s IACC-certified conference center features 19 conference and meeting rooms including the 9,500-square-foot Americas Ballroom at the lakeside Versailles Ballroom. When you book a meeting, it comes with a conference service professional, free 4G Wi-Fi access throughout all meeting spaces and in-house audiovisual services.

If there is a better hair-of-the-dog drink than a bloody mary, we sure don’t know what it is. Visit Beaumont shared its recipe for a tasty Sunday brunch cocktail, and they even made it for eight, so you can treat your friends!

Born and raised in Bryan, about 90 miles east of Village of Salado, Chadley Hollas, Village of Salado’s director of tourism, says he came to the town with one goal: to help Salado become Texas’ best small destination. His favorite thing about his adopted hometown is the people. “They are quirky, creative and hospitable—a neat combination that makes for many good conversations,” says Hollas.

Question: What is your one must-have for business travel?

"My Mophie power station so I don’t have to compete for outlets during a flight delay or have that awkward moment of leaning into my neighbor’s lap while trying to find an outlet on the plane."
