• Planners Can Learn a Lot From James Bond

    Nobody Does it Better

In the James Bond Movies, Agent 007 is considered to be the best at what he does. In the opening of “The Spy Who Loved Me,” Carly Simon sang “Nobody Does It Better.” While I have that earworm going, let me explain how you can be your own Bond, James Bond.

GREAT PLAN
The team at HQ has identified the threat and knows what needs to be done. Bond and his stakeholders determine a plan for how to achieve the goals. They go over it in detail, so that everyone knows what needs to happen.

GREAT TEAM
Bond has a team working at HQ to make sure he is successful. When he’s in the thick of it, he has people in the background ready to assist when needed.

GREAT TOOLS
Bond’s support team develops the best tools to help him execute the plan. They practice using the tools before he ever needs them. Bond may not always know when he’ll use a specific tool, but he is ready when the time comes.

GREAT EXECUTION
Bond is always at his best and ever-alert when going for the bad guys, even while sleeping (remember the tarantula?!). He thinks through the plan, anticipating all the possible moves. He’s ready for anything, because anything can happen. And, usually does.

GREAT RECOVERY
After every case, Bond knows he needs to recuperate from his (minor) wounds, which almost always involves a special person and an exotic location. This recovery time allows him to come back and be the best another day.

Time after time, James Bond shows us how to be the best at what he does. Follow these simple guidelines, and people will be saying nobody does it better than you.
