In the heart of Hill Country is an annual girls’ getaway. But this one is a little different—it has more than 250 attendees and involves shooting from a helicopter. A Girl & A Gun Women’s Shooting League was founded by Julianna Crowder in 2011 as a way for women to connect with other women who are passionate about shooting and want to learn in a supportive environment. The first two conferences were held in Waco, then moved to Copperhead Creek Shooting Club in Marble Falls.
Recently, I spent 48 hours hiking through backcountry with nothing but a 28-pound pack and the company of five other hikers - only one of whom I’d ever met before. Let me tell you, there is nothing like pushing through exhaustion to build a sense of camaraderie. I made friends in the small victories: reaching the top of a bluff, scaling down a boulder, building a fire.
By the time we reached the end of the trail, I knew these were people I could count on. And I knew something else, too. There is something incredibly powerful about outdoor teambuilding.
